Clinic specializing in assessing and treating clients with various acute conditions and injuries involving joints, muscles, and bones
- help clients rehabilitate from an acute injury, a fracture, or surgery through treatment and education
- care team includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation assistants, and physiotherapy assistants
- treatments aim to:
- reduce pain
- strengthen muscles
- improve joint mobility and range of motion
- enhance balance and coordination
- decrease swelling
Publicly-funded physiotherapy programs
- limited to internal referral sources from The Ottawa Hospital
- for individuals in need of rehabilitation in acute stages of recovery
- individuals do not need to pay for these programs if they are eligible, as they are covered by OHIP. Supplemental costs will be associated with splint and materials provision. Costs of splints and other goods are not covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) but may be covered by extended health care plans
- treatment options vary depending on the referral service requested and potential funding options
Episodes of Care Program
- time-limited, goal-oriented, self-management program
- the physiotherapist will assess and treat the individual to improve, develop or rehabilitate physical function and mobility when these have been compromised by a debilitating event or disease, pain, injury or surgical procedure
- An "episode" is a short series of physiotherapy sessions focused on reaching functional goals after surgery (such as feeling safe and stable while climbing stairs)
Bundle of Care Program
- designed to promote greater integration in health care delivery, and improve patient outcomes and experience after certain orthopedic surgeries
Outpatient Hospital-Based Care
- for persons in need of rehabilitation in acute stages of recovery
- may include treatment for conditions such as non-operative fractures
Occupational Therapy
- available to clients with injury or disease to structures of the hand, wrist, and/or forearm
- Eligibility
- Individuals in need of physical therapy
- Episodes of Care program - to be eligible, fall into at least one of the following categories:
- insured under OHIP and 65 years of age or older
- insured under OHIP and is 19 years old
- insured under OHIP and was discharged from a hospital after an overnight stay, and requires physiotherapy for the condition, illness, or injury that occasioned the procedure
- insured under OHIP and discharged from a hospital following outpatient/day surgery and requires physiotherapy for the condition, illness or injury that occasioned the procedure
- is approved for funding of services under the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) or Ontario Works program (OW)
- be discharged from a hospital following outpatient/day surgery and requires physiotherapy for the condition, illness, or injury
- Bunde of Care program
- must have a valid Ontario health card and undergone an elective (non urgent), primary hip, shoulder or knee replacement surgery (first replacement) at a qualifying Ontario hospital
- be within 6 weeks of the surgery
- Outpatient Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy
- must be referred by an internal referral source at the Ottawa Hospital
- Application Process
- Referrals from internal sources at the Ottawa Hospital are made internally through our EPIC system; referrals from external sources can be faxed to 613-738-8431
- For occupational therapy services that are not funded, please call 613-738-8208 or book an appointment in person. Please note that our department requires a referral from a physician for all OT services in ADVANCE of scheduling the initial assessment. No drop-ins accepted
