Description

The Indigenous Court Program supports and advocates for self-identifying Indigenous individuals involved in the justice system, providing advocacy, support, and culturally sensitive services. The program is designed to help both youth and adults understand their rights, responsibilities, and options when navigating the justice system.

The Indigenous Court Worker offers assistance in criminal and family court cases, ensuring that Indigenous people have access to the proper legal services and cultural resources. The program also works to raise awareness of the challenges Indigenous peoples face within the justice system and advocates for diversion and culturally appropriate practices.

Program Objectives:

  • Advocate for Indigenous Peoples: Ensure Indigenous individuals have the support they need to navigate the justice system, advocating for culturally sensitive and alternative approaches to justice.
  • Promote Legal Awareness: Help individuals understand their rights, responsibilities, and available options when appearing in court.
  • Cultural Support: Provide access to Elders and cultural programming to support Indigenous individuals in the justice system.
  • Increase System Awareness: Raise awareness of the specific challenges faced by Indigenous peoples within the legal system, and work towards ensuring equitable treatment.

Program Services:

  • Court Support & Advocacy: Provide advocacy for Indigenous individuals involved in criminal and family courts.
  • Legal Guidance: Assist individuals in understanding court documentation and their rights, responsibilities, and options.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Facilitate access to Elders, cultural programming, and support in navigating the justice system with cultural sensitivity.
  • Referral Services: Connect individuals to appropriate legal, community, and justice-related services.
  • Letters of Support: Providing letters that advocate for Indigenous individuals within the justice system if eligible.
  • Diversion Advocacy: Advocate for diversion options to address the root causes of involvement in the justice system.
  • Systemic Awareness: Work to enhance awareness of the unique issues Indigenous peoples face within the justice system, ensuring proper access to legal resources.
  • Culturally Appropriate Legal Process: Ensure that judicial processes and locations are culturally appropriate and sensitive to the needs of Indigenous individuals.

E Naaknind Anishinaabeg - Indigenous Peoples Court | IPC

Description:

E Naaknind Anishinaabeg - Indigenous Peoples Court is a specialized court program hosted through the Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre. This program works alongside the Court Support and Gladue programs to offer a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approach to sentencing and rehabilitation for Indigenous individuals involved in the justice system.

Eligibility
All self-identifying Indigenous people
Court Services: Indigenous Identity: Available to all self-identifying Indigenous peoples. Involvement in Justice System: For individuals involved in criminal or family court proceedings. Eligibility for Court Support and E Naaknind Anishinaabeg (ENA-IPC): Request through Lawyer: Can be requested by the individual's lawyer. Request through Indigenous Legal Services: Can be requested through Indigenous legal service providers or other support workers.
