You Must Report Child Abuse or Neglect

In Ontario, everyone, including members of the public and professionals, is required by law to report suspected child abuse or neglect

• The duty to report applies to any child who is, or appears to be, under 16 years old
• If you have reasonable grounds to suspect that a child may be in need of protection, you must report it right away
• You do not need proof, if you are concerned, it is okay to call

HOW TO REPORT

If a child is in immediate danger, call 911 right away

Report to Halton Children's Aid Society (CAS)

• 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

If the situation is urgent and you cannot reach Children's Aid, contact Halton Regional Police Service

WHAT TO KNOW

• Reporting includes concerns about children who may be at risk of abuse or neglect in their own homes or elsewhere
• The Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017 (CYFSA) exists to help protect children and support their safety and well-being
• Reports can be made anonymously
• The "Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect: It's Your Duty" brochure explains the duty to report and answers common questions
• If you have questions about a specific situation, you can contact a Children's Aid Society or a lawyer
