Mississauga Halton Central West Regional Cancer Program

One of 13 regional cancer centres in Ontario * offers services for diagnosis and specialized treatment for cancer * health care team may include oncologists, oncology nurses, oncology pharmacists, dietitians, medication access specialist/drug navigator, psychosocial oncology team, radiation therapists, hospital chaplain, volunteers, etc.

Outpatient services:

• Cancer screening
• Medical oncology - clinics and radiation therapy
• Systemic oncology - clinics and chemotherapy
• Surgical oncology - clinics
• Palliative care clinics within medical and radiation oncology
• Diagnostic Assessment Programs (DAP)
• Rapid Evalutaion & Assessment of Cancer Treatment (REACT)
• Brain tumour, central nervous system tumours
• clinical trials

Inpatient services:

• Dedicated oncology inpatient beds
• Complex malignant hematology

Psychosocial services:

• Survivorship and follow-up care
• Nutrition support
• Drug coverage support
• Support for mental, emotional and spiritual well-being
• Patient and family education

Patients are admitted to the unit for medical reasons like stroke (CVA), pneumonia or, for the treatment, management, and care related to cancer diagnosis * health care team meets on a regular basis to review and continue to develop the plan of care as needs change * literature is available on a variety of issues and can be obtained from the Oncology Information Centre on the unit

Palliative care - therapists comfort and support individuals and families who are living with a terminal illness * patients may be admitted to the palliative care unit from home or hospital
